Liko is life & Art

Printmaking and painting are both my interests since my time in the art school.
My main field is graphic design and I have been working in this field for many years.
In the early years of my professional graphic work, I focused on computer work, but almost 6 years ago, I again included painting and printmaking in my work.
I always wanted to be able to produce products based on art and design with the knowledge I gained from graphic design.
We are definitely more limited when we want to start working with less damage to the world and environment. Because we know that with each production, a product is added to this cycle, which is not known how long it will last.
The topic of product sustainability and slow fashion is very important to me, and I would like to find a way for people to deeply love what they buy and establish an emotional connection with it.
And this was the beginning for me… for this…
And I drew on raw fabrics.
I started printmaking and painting on clothes and made various prints along the way. Printing on clothes and fabric and I chose the name Liko for my work.

I defined my work with this goal:
Production of artistic and handmade products that are unique so that everyone who gets them will love them and if one day they cannot use them, they will not easily throw them away and on the contrary, they will want to give them to another person or contact us again to change them. to turn it into a new garment or device…
In order to prevent the production of clothing waste, which is a large share of waste in the world, and to encourage people to make more targeted purchases and to be mindful of what they buy…

On the way of printing experiences, one day I happened to see a picture of a print with plants, which surprised me a lot. At that time, I did not know what kind of print it was. I got curious and found out about it by searching. Yes, a print based on plants and natural materials called “Ecoprint”.
I went to the world of learning this art and along the way I found mentors and they introduced me to this beautiful world of environmental printing.
Ecoprint or eco-friendly printing was developed by India Flint about 25 years ago. This method made it possible to transfer the effects of different plants to different materials such as paper, fabric, stone, etc.
We may not be able to search for the exact history of this art, but we can almost say that this art has been used in various fields for thousands of years, and according to the documents, its history can be attributed to the Middle Ages.
One of the advantages of Ecoprint is the use of natural and non-toxic materials, creating unique and personal and sustainable designs.
These characteristics are very valuable in the production cycle.
Ecoprint is one of the manual printing methods. The word eco refers to a conscious behavior in reducing damage to the environment, and print means printing and leaving an impression.
In this printing method, plant extracts are imprinted on natural substrates. My choice for this type of printing is cellulosic substrates such as paper and fabric.
Tannin, which is biologically present in plants, is released due to heat and pressure and transfers itself to the cloth or paper substrate.
In the meantime, I experienced the traditional method of dyeing, but along the way, I noticed hidden events that, in my opinion, need a lot of reforms in order to be loyal to the environment. In traditional methods, water consumption is very high, but in this way, I made a lot of efforts, studies and searches in order to find ways that this art can stay true to its name, i.e. nature-loving printing, and I am very interested in this information. to share with people who are interested in this path and introduce and present this art in a country that gives great importance to art and nature.
Fortunately, I was able to prevent the water from being drained to a great extent by doing a lot of research on this route and to replace different routes to do the work. As you know, the clothing industry is one of the most polluting industries.
Less waste, and longer use became more prominent in my goals.
At first, I only focused on printing, but over time I was able to create a special combination of printmaking and painting.
This work has certain characteristics, the most important of which is the unpredictability of the result. You don’t know what role you’re going to play. For example, the effect of each leaf can be different from another, even if they are from the same source. The path of this print does not allow you to get exactly what you have decided, and each time nature presents you with a different print, and in each roll of fabric, you face new and special patterns. And I think this is what makes Ecoprint art special. It is unlikely that the resulting effect can be repeated. There are different techniques in this print and you may be able to choose the type of technique, but the effects of the leaves are always different. Even the seasons have an effect on these changes. Plants are as different as human fingerprints.
